Milan registry office open for ID cards on two Sundays

Milan’s central registry office in Via Larga 12 will be open non-stop from 08.30 to 15.30 on Sunday 9 and Sunday 25 June, exclusively for issuing identity cards for Italians and foreigners, adults and children, in time for summer vacations.

Announcing the extra hours, the city hall said the unprecedented experiment was planned by the Civic services department in view of the annual rush to obtain or update identity cards as the holiday period draws near.  The 15 counters will issue only the traditional cardboad ID cards – no electronic “credit card”-type documents, therefore – during these hours.  But these are valid for all identification purposes, including travel to countries (like most of the EU) which accept them instead of passports.

“It’s an opportunity, especially for families with children, to avoid losing working hours,” said councillor Daniela Benelli, “and it will bring some relief to the Saturday morning counter hours.”

And for those who cannot leave their kids at home, a play area with two nannies will be set up in cooperation with the prominent furniture chain Ikea..

This initative was designed particularly for workers who have difficulty in taking time off to line up for documents during the normal opening hours.  It comes on top of extensions already in force in via Larga, on Saturdays from 08.45 to 12.00 and on Thursdays up to 19.30, as well as the usual hours of 08.30 to 15.30 on all weekdays.

The addresses and opening hours – as well as summer closing dates – of the many local registry offices around the city are available on the municipal website.
