To mark Global Handwashing Day on 15 October, the city of Milan is planning to install 60 detergent dispensers in 29 public places.
The spots marked for the hygiene campaign are Palazzo Reale, the city’s main museum and exhibition space, the city’s registry offices, the city hall offices and public libraries.
The city councillor for health says that the initiative is not just a response to a possible swine flu epidemic but is more a matter of good public hygiene. A private company is sponsoring the campaign and will be paying for the soap for five months.
Global Handwashing Day started in 2008 as an initiative of the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap, sponsored by UNICEF, the United Nations children’s fund, numerous non-governmental organisations, multinational corporations and small private businesses. The campaign is to raise awareness of the numerous benefits of washing hands with soap, as well as to promote an awareness of the importance of handwashing throughout civil society, from the national level right down to offices and schools.
