Cartoomics XX in Milan

Comics and cartoon fans will flock to the Rho trade fair grounds this weekend for the 20th edition of the annual Cartoomics salon.

Cartoons, comic strips, cosplay, sci-fi, fantasy and collections are the main headlines to this three-day bonanza, from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 March, billed as “comics week”.  A varied programme of special events, from movie-makers’ lab to live talks by the most famous artists, from the universe of Star Trek to Horror Day, will invite enthusiasts from all over Europe.  The programme kicked off on Wednesday with a whole day of Iron Man films to celebrate the superhero’s 50th birthday.

The entry ticket also covers the speciality shows – Ludica, the Italian videogame festival with its spin-off sideshows on modelling and for kids, Weekend Donna, dedicated to female fans of the cartoon and comics world, and Hobby Show, the salon of decoration and creativity.  Another special will cover 50 years of the favourite Italian comic-strip character Diabolik, created by the Giussani sisters and aided and abetted by his sidekick Eva Kant, with an exhibit of original story-boards, prototypes, gadgets and memorabilia.

Cosplay City offers free entrance to fans showing up in costume for the non-competitive parade on Friday, while competitors for the Cosplay City Cup on Saturday will hope to win a free trip to the original Disney World in Orlando, Florida.  Professional make-up artists will be on hand for face-painting and advice to beginners.

The Satisfaction of Yesterday is the title of a section dedicated to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, with a display of original instruments, photos, vinyl records, original lithographs by John Lennon and other surprises, and accompanied by music from two tribute bands, The Beatops and Donkeys Forever.

Events will be happening in tandem in the Agora 1 and Agora 2 exhibition spaces, and in parallel with live stage events and movie projections, so it will be essential to make a logistical plan of the visit for fans who don’t want to miss their favourite characers and superheroes.  You can prepare your visit on the Cartoomics website, and also take advantage of the €2 discount for online tickets, jumping the queue at the box office.

The show will be open each day from 09.30 to 19.00, with an entrance fee of €12 (offering discounts at many of the stands), or €8 for the over-65s and members of groups of more than 20.  Kids up to 10 enter free, and there are further offers for families and 2- or 3-day season tickets.  Rho trade fair city is on the red M1 line of the metro, and there is ample parking space for visitors arriving by car.
