Mayor of Milan steps aside

Giuseppe Sala auto-suspends himself as mayor.

Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, has stepped down as the city's first citizen because of what is thought to be an official enquiry into his position during his time as the chief executive officer of Expo Milano 2015.

The enquiry concerns developments in the service sector of the universal exhibition that was held in Milan in 2015.

Sala himself says that he has not received any official communication about wrongdoing but the enquiry appears to involve one of the key infrastructure contracts awarded back in 2012 to a Veneto construction company, Mantovani, whose price for the work was 42 per cent lower than what was expected. The contract was awarded during a period when progress for Expo 2015 had almost ground to a halt.

Sala was the CEO of Expo Milano 2015 from 2010-2015.

For the time being the vice-mayor of Milan Anna Scavuzzu will take over as mayor.
