Kapoor, Fontana at the Luigi Pecci Centre

Works by Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor and by Italian painter Lucio Fontana are contrasted in an exhibition at the Milan branch of Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art of Prato, running from 21 January to 15 February.

Kapoor's Here and There (1987) is a sandstone sculpture, one part of which consists of a heap of rounded forms like cocoons or primitive leather bags. The other part is a carved, hollowed-out square mass, an ancestral structure like an altar or a sanctuary.

Fontana's Spatial Concept (1962) looks like a pictorial development of his terracotta Nature series (1959-1960), with its thick pink oil-painted surface on which concentric carvings reverberate and the plastic relief opens onto a deep rift, a jagged "cut" inferred on the canvas.
