Milan to celebrate first Donation Day

New Italian law sanctions solidarity initiatives.

Under a new law voted through parliament in July, 4 October – already dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and celebrated as Peace Day – is now also Donation Day, when the spirit of solidarity with the less fortunate is promoted across the country.

Numerous initiatives around the city, organised in many cases by schools of all levels, will celebrate the value of donating, of solidarity, of exchange, of participation, and of citizens’ commitment to the common good and the construction of the social fabric, under the heading “Donation is more than just giving”.

Among the activities in Milan, a conference at Expo Milano 2015’s Cascina Triulza pavilion, dedicated to social services, will hold a conference on blood donation and other donation activities. Speakers will include Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin and Labour and Social Policy Minister Giuliano Poletti.

A peace march will start in Rho’s Piazza SanVittore at 09.30, and participants will be able to obtain an entry ticket to Expo, valid from 12.00 of the same day, for €20 and take part in the Mensa dei Popoli at Cascina Triulza.

The NGOs Ronda Carità and Solidarietà Onlus will conduct a guided tour of Milan’s historic Monumental Cemetery to visit the tombs of illustrious milanesi, many decorated with monuments by artists of the level of Antonio Canova, ArnaldoPomodoro, Ulisse Stacchini, Giò Ponti and Gae Aulenti. The tour starts at 09.45, for a voluntary contribution of at least €10 for adults and €5 for juniors.
