Milanesiana culture festival opens

22 June-16 July. Nobel laureates Wole Soyinka and John M. Coetzee, Pulitzer prizewinner Michael Cunningham and Oscar winners Bernardo Bertolucci and Gabriele Salvatores are among the protagonists of this year’s Milanesiana festival, under the theme of “Manias and Obsessions”.

Over 50 appointments – mostly in Milan, but a few also in Turin and Bergamo – with over 160 international guests from 15 countries will include four art shows, seven theatre events (including three previews) and 21 concerts.

The eclectic, strongly international festival starts on Monday 22 June with readings by Israeli author David Grossman, followed on the stage by the Barcelona Gypsy Klezmer Orchestra. On Tuesday, minister of culture Dario Franceschini will be in the audience for a concert by Franco Battiato, for decades considered one of Italy’s most popular singer-songwriters.

Hosted at 19 locations around Milan, the festival events are all free of entry charge as long as seats are available, except for the evening of 23 June. Details of the programme are available on the festival website.
