Milan’s Trussardi Foundation presents The Great Mother

26 Aug-15 Nov. Mixing past and present, juxtaposing contemporary art, historical works, and artifacts from the world of film and literature, the exhibition The Great Mother at Palazzo Reale explores the iconography of motherhood in art and visual culture of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibit of some 400 works from early 20th-century avant-garde movements to the present by 127 international artists traces a history of women's empowerment, chronicling gender struggles, sexual politics, and clashes between tradition and emancipation.

The show will include a presentation of the archive of Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn, who throughout her life, starting in the 1930s, gathered thousands of images of female idols, mothers, matrons, Venuses and prehistoric deities.

Other sections will explore the contribution of women to the Futurism, Dada and Surrealism movements, including a selection of works by Louise Bourgeois.
