Shen Yun

An evening of what is billed as classical Chinese ballet by the Divine Performing Arts company, but which was described by one reviewer in The Telegraph when it first performed in London in 2011 as a Disneyfied version of the real thing, long on anti-communist propaganda.

The Divine Performing Arts company was formed in New York in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture destroyed by the Communist regime. Its dancers are for the most part members of Falun Gong, a movement with Buddhist and Tao roots that has been persecuted in China since the 1990s and outlawed in 1999. Its founder Li Hongzhi has lived in the United States since 1998.
