This is the most elegant part of the city. In the winding streets north of the cathedral (Il Duomo) and La Scala opera theatre there are stately buildings, numerous excellent restaurants and up-market shops, selling everything from clothing to kitchenware. There is a quiet confidence about the area, with none of the hurry and urgency of nearby Montenapoleone. Here it is possible to find both small and some large elegant apartments, although you have to hunt for them and be in the know. The magnificent Brera Museum is located here and, although the façade is in serious need of restoration, inside the organisation of the rooms and the care of the art collection are of the highest standards. In this area you are within walking distance of all parts of the historic centre, even the famous shopping area of the Quadrilatero. The metro connections are close but it is impossible to get here by car unless you are a resident and even then finding a parking space is almost impossible. Bus services don’t penetrate the heart of this area either, but then there is no need for public transport as everything is within easy walking distance.
