Free bike rental for 5-11 year olds.
Milan’s successful bike rental service BikeMI has launched an experimental, free version for kids.
Docking station no. 400 in Piazza Castello is open Saturdays and Sundays from 09.00 to 19.00 with a fleet of junior-size bikes at the disposal of kids accompanied by an adult, who must leave an ID document as a deposit and agree to be responsible for the child.
At the same time, a bigger rack has been installed at the same location for extra adult bikes, both pedal-powered and electrically assisted “pedelecs”, so that families can ride together in the Sempione park and in the city centre.
If the experiment is a success, BikeMI management says, it will be extended with more junior bikes around the city. No mention was made of plans to start charging for rental.
The experiment comes on the heels of a milestone in the rental service: the 40,000th subscription was taken out last weekend, and the lucky winner will receive a 10-year subscription as a prize.
BikeMI offers three types of subscription – daily, weekly and annual. And in conjunction with Expo Milan 2015, it is currently offering these subscriptions at a discount of up to 50 per cent with a free entry ticket to Expo thrown in.
