Discount for ATM fines

Milan public transport authority ATM has announced a discount on fines for passengers without a valid ticket who are willing to pay on the spot.

With the discount, passengers who forgot to stamp their ticket, or who cannot exhibit a valid one, can now pay €45 immediately, or €65 within 60 days of the offence.  After that, the full fine remains €120 for an unstamped or wrongly stamped ticket, or €150 for the traveller with no ticket at all.

More and more Milanese are however choosing to travel with a monthly or annual season-ticket, ATM told the press.  From September to December, holders of monthly tickets increased by over 130,000, or 16 per cent, whjile annual season-tickets sold last year were 11,000 more than in 2009, a 28 per cent increase.
