Expo 2015 figures in line with expectations

2,700,000 visits in first month.

Nearly three million people visited Expo 2015 in Milan during May according to the first figures released by Giuseppe Sala, chief executive of the universal fair's managing company.

Ticket sales so far are estimated to have reached 15 million. These figures are in line with the hoped for estimates of 20 million visitors for Expo 2015 before it closes at the end of October.

June is expected to be better than the opening month of May, especially as heads of government and state are now expected to visit the fair. Opening hours are also longer now on Saturdays and Sundays.

The most eagerly expected guest is Vladimir Putin, partly because his visit is also thought to be the occasion for considerable diplomatic activity, particularly on the subject of Ukraine and Syria. Although Russia has just confirmed the visit, no date had yet been set.

The theme of Expo 2015 is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life and one of the spin-offs of the fair is expected to be not just new agricultural and horticultural techniques and methods but also the use of new sustainable construction materials and energy saving technologies.
