On track for 20m target.
Expo Milan 2015 has hosted some six million visitors during the first two months of its six-month duration, according to the figures announced by commissioner Giuseppe Sala at the end of June.
And experience shows, he added, that visitors in the last two months always score the highest figures, “a little because of the temperature, a little because of the idea that the Expo is about to close.”
This means Milan’s Expo is on track for the target figure of 20 million visitors.
Figures also reveal that the proportion of foreign tourists is increasing. From 20 per cent of the total in May, they increased to almost 30 per cent in June.
Sala has promised that he will soon make public all the statistics on tickets sold, visitors to the Expo site and the effects on the city of Milan.
However not everybody shares Sala’s optimism. Milan city councillor Basilio Rizzo has pointed out that Expo car-parks are not full, and public transport utilities ATM and Trenord say that passenger statistics are below estimates.
While hoteliers share Sala’s satisfaction, city shopkeepers are reported to be disappointed by the increase in business.
