Health checks offered by city hall, Lions
Milan residents are entitled to free screening for hearing, sight, diabetes, breathing and osteoporosis throughout May and until 27 June in selected pharmacies around the city.
The initiative is offered by the Milan chapter of the Lions Club International and with the patronage of the city administration. Trained health workers will carry out the screenings and provide information material on the issues being checked.
People wishing to take advantage of the opportunity are invited to visit the Lions Club website to consult a list of the pharmacies taking part and the dates when screenings will be carried out, as well as the phone number to make an appointment and avoid queues.
Announcing the initiative, city councillor Pierfrancesco Majorino pointed out that prevention is essential, as some illnesses can develop without apparent symptoms. Glaucoma, for example, can do so and can eventually lead to blindness. Others can develop gradually, such as hearing problems which impact on the quality of life of some 14 per cent of Italians over 60, or some 1,600,000 people.
Atmospheric pollution and smoking can lead to inflammation of the body’s airways, which can then require constant oxygen supplement, while osteoporosis in general develops with no warning symptoms, and is discovered only when a bone fracture occurs.
