Friday standstill expected
A general strike called for Friday 12 December will hit traffic and public services in Milan.
City hall has published a note on its website warning that the strike will involve all private and public sectors, including transport and schools, so all public services are expected to suffer suspension or slowdown throughout the whole day.
Public transport will be hit at different times in different towns and cities. In Milan, buses, trams and metro will halt from 19.00 until the end of the day’s service. While this will not bring the city to a standstill during the day, it will mean many workers who were not striking will need to leave their place of work early in order to get home.
Trains operated by Trenitalia and Trenord, the regional service with Milan as a hub, will not run between 09.00 and 17.00. While the strike is mainly about the cut in the already scarse resources for regions and local administrations, a student demonstration against Expo 2015 and against the ejection of squatters from occupied housing will start at 09.00 on Largo Cairoli.
