Italians change lifestyle to beat Coronavirus

Italy issues guidelines to halt the spread of Coronavirus.

The Italian government has issued a set of new guidelines to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, which are to be respected nationwide for the next month.

The guidelines, drawn up the government's special scientific committee, were issued on 4 March and are designed to be followed for 30 days, after which they will be re-evaluated.

No more hugs or kisses

The recommendations include an end to greeting friends with handshakes, kisses or hugs. People are advised to maintain a one-metre distance between each other.

Elderly

People aged over 75 are advised to remain at home while those over the age of 65 with existing health problems should also stay indoors.

Crowds

Central to the guidelines is the recommendation to avoid crowded places.

Self-isolation

The recommendations advise self-isolating if you have the slightest suspicion of a potential Coronavirus infection, even a mild temperature.

Use a handkerchief

When sneezing or coughing, it is recommended to use a handkerchief - avoiding contact with your hands.

Don't share drinks

Avoid sharing the same bottles, glasses and cups "particularly during sporting events."

Sport

Sporting events in Italy, including championship football matches, should be held behind closed doors, the committee has advised.

Events

Public meetings or conferences should be postponed, particularly those involving the health sector, to free up doctors and medical staff to deal with the current situation.

Hospitals

It is now forbidden to accompany people to hospital emergency rooms. Access to private clinics, retirement homes and hospices will be limited.
