Major Lombardy road, rail bridge closed for checks

Transport delayed between Milan and Bergamo.

The road and rail bridge at Paderno d'Adda, linking the provinces of Lecco and Bergamo, has been closed for an indefinite period while urgent maintenance is being carried out.  The closure is causing noteworthy delays in traffic between Milan and Bergamo.

The 130-year-old bridge was closed without warning on 14 September after “technical indications” discovered during a safety check being carried out by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the company owning and managing rail infrastructure, prompted urgent repairs.

In a statement, RFI said the structure, known as Ponte San Michele, was in any case due for “radical restructuring” work during the next few months.

Milan-based regional rail network Trenord advises that traffic between Paderno d'Adda and Calusco will be temporarily substituted by a shuttle bus service, which will take at least 45 minutes. Season tickets will remain valid also on alternative routes avoiding the bottleneck, said Trenord.

Trenord has published an amended timetable on its website.
