The fashionable Arco della Pace area of Milan promises to be as popular with the happy-hour cocktail crowd in winter as in the summer now that the city has given its blessing to semi-permanent coverings over the pavements outside many of the bars.
However residents in this well-heeled district of the city are not happy. They complain that the night-time confusion and traffic is already bad enough, and that it will be made worse when the bars can offer outside premises protected from the cold. They complain that parking has become impossible, that the noise is unacceptable and there has been an increase in rubbish on the streets. The residents are now petitioning the city to limit traffic into the area in the evening.
