Milan campaigns for blood donors

Cerchiamo sangue di tutti i colori.

To coincide with the World Blood Donor Day on 14 June the city, the local health organisations and nine donor associations are launching a campaign to attract new and younger blood donors.

Under the slogan “Cerchiamo sangue di tutti colori. Aiutaci anche tu”, 18 year olds will receive a letter explaining the importance of donating blood and there will be special school visits. Several sporting personalities are also supporting the campaign.

The number of donors went down in the first five months of 2015 compared with the same time the previous year (35,977 so far this year compared with 36,772 in 2014). It is thought this is partly because of the ageing of the usual pool of donors.

The fall-off comes when the need has increased thanks to the rise in the number of people in the city for Expo 2015.

World Blood Donor Day, one of eight such public health days recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), was first established in 2004 to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank donors for their voluntary help.
