Milan collects warm clothing for homeless

As temperatures begin to drop, Milan city hall has again this year organised a collection of warm clothing for the homeless on the city streets.
In collaboration with 12 associations that care for the homeless, the comune has organised nine collection points throughout the city for Saturday 17 November.  Gazebos will be set up to accept woollen blankets, sleeping-bags, coats, winter jackets and other warm items of clothing.  “We are asking the Milanese to lend a hand to those who are in difficulty,” explains socal affairs councillor Pierfrancesco Majorino.  “The clothing and blankets will be distributed to the homess and others who need them in the cold winter days we are expecting.”
The gazebos will be staffed from 09.30 to 17.00 on Saturday in Piazzale Baiamonti, Piazzale Baracca, Lambrate railway station (corner of Via Bassini and Valvassori Peroni), Piazza Argentina, Viale Papiniano (Piazzale Cantore), at the Arco della Pace, Piazzale Selinunte, Colonne S. Lorenzo and Piazzale Maciachini.  A handy map of the locations is available on the city hall website.
The network of associations has also managed to increase the number of emergency beds from last year’s 2,020 to 2,500.  “The [economic] crisis is beginning to bite,” continued Majorino, “and there are many new poor which our services are assisting.  I’m certain the people of Milan will respond with the great generosity which has always been a hallmark of our city.”
The network of associations includes Fondazione Fratelli di San Francesco, Fondazione Progetto Arca, Comunità di Sant’Egidio, Croce Rossa Italiana, Associazione Ronda della Carità e della Solidarietà, Opera Cardinal Ferrari, Associazione Milano in Azione, Associazione Clochard alla Riscossa, Associazione Linea Gialla, City Angels and Associazione S.O.S Milano.
The city council also urges residents to report any homeless or other needy they might see to the two city offices dealing with these issues:
- the Help Centre in the main railway station (Via Ferrante Aporte, corner of Viale Brianza).  The centre can be reached by phone on 02-884.47645, 02-884.47647 or 02-884.47649 and is open on weekdays from 08.30 to 19.30 and on weekends from 09.00 to 15.00.  In emergency weather conditions, the centre will be open 24 hours.
- Casa dell’Accoglienza Ortles in viale Ortles 69, telephone 02-884.45239 when the Help Centre is closed.
