Milan launches measures against heat wave

Help for the elderly and disabled.

Milan city hall has increased its programme of assistance for the elderly, the disabled and other residents particularly suffering from the summer heat.

Each year, city authorities take into account the possible absence of carers, relations or neighbours who may be on vacation and on whose help many of the city’s more fragile residents may rely.

A free help line is now active on the number 800 777 888 from 08.00 to 19.00, Monday to Saturday, and during the same hours on Sundays whenever the city wilts under a heat-wave.

Operators manage requests for meals on wheels, domestic help for personal hygiene or house cleaning, comforting phone calls or visits, and a helping hand for shopping trips or visits to a doctor’s surgery.

City hall invites all residents to call the free-phone number if they notice elderly or other frail people suffering from the heat, or who might need assistance from the municipal social services.

The city also operates a dedicated website, www.curaMi.net, where needy over-60s can request BAF family assistance vouchers. On the same site, trained social operators can apply for placement with one of the municipality’s services or partners, or register for further training.
