Milan smog triggers pollution controls

Traffic and heating restrictions to check Milan's pollution.

Milan city hall has decreed a block on the most polluting vehicles from Wednesday 9 December, after 10 successive days of PM10 levels around the city.

Banned vehicles include Euro 3-class diesels with no anti-particle filters. Until further notice, the ban will apply from 08.30 to 18.00 for private use, and from 07.30 to 10.00 for commercial traffic.

Mobile police units equipped with exhaust testing gear will be on the roads to check suspicious vehicles.

Central heating units must be adjusted down one degree from 20 to 19ºC, and the heating period reduced from 14 to 12 hours per day.

Buses and trams on the ATM network will be free for adults taking children up to 10 (already travelling free) to school from Wednesday to Friday.

The city has also announced that the BikeMi bicycle-sharing scheme will be free from Wednesday to Friday. Users will still need their credit card for taking out a bike, but no charge will be debited.
