Milan pushes ahead with advanced 5G networks.
Work has already started in Milan’s Cinisello Balsamo and Bresso suburbs on a new fifth generation (5G) network of mobile phone and internet coverage which will extend to cover the entire metropolitan area by the end of 2019.
Mobile phone users will experience an immediate improvement in the coverage brought by a high-speed network capable of handling hundreds of thousands of connections simultaneously. And the vastly increased capabilities will open the door to private enterprises and public offices offering services to residents, tourists and business visitors alike.
The latest and fastest communications network will have far-reaching effects on industrial production, agriculture, security in the city, distance learning, distance medical care, transport and tourism and more – apart from the immediate impact on mobile phones and their connection to internet.
Vodafone Italia, who won the bid to install the network, is investing some €90m in 41 separate projects in seven categories: health and wellbeing, security and surveillance, smart energy, mobility and transport, production and industry 4.0, education/learning/entertainment and digital divide.
Presenting the project, Milan councillor Francesco Vassalli underlined that the new 5G spectrum, together with the 25,000 km of optical fibre broadband already connecting most of the city, puts Milan comfortably in the lead for services to its citizens.
