Milan to observe Armed Forces Day

4 Nov. Day of National Unity in Milan.

The National holiday of 4 November, the Day of National Unity and of the Armed Forces, will see ceremonies and activities for old and young across Milan.

Italy’s Air Force and Carabinieri para-military police will welcome visitors in a programme called “Open barracks”, where equipment and premises will be on display.

Among the more exciting initiatives is the chance to fly a flight simulator and take part in a virtual aerobatics mission with the famous Frecce Tricolori, the Air Force aerobatics team.  This will be a high point in an exhibition of historic aeronautics going back to the first world war, and including the spectacular group flight of seaplanes across the Atlantic to South America led by Italo Balbi in 1930.

The exhibit will be held in the HQ of the 1st Aeronautics Region in Piazza Ermete Novelli, starting on 3 November.

The Lombardy Regional Command of the Carabinieri in Via della Moscova will offer a display of their modern and historic vehicles, from Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde, Seat Leon and Alfa Romeo Giuliettas to BMW R1300 and Aprilia Caponord 1200 motorcycles.  The display will include vehicles from the First Intervention Unit, the Scientific Investigation Unit and the Anti-Sabotage bomb-disposal squad, including remote-controlled robots.  A dog handling team will also demonstrate their operations.

The flag-raising ceremony, with civic and military leaders in attendance, takes place at 12.00 in Piazza del Duomo.
