Milan's Area C closes again on 26 August

The video cameras of Milan’s central limited traffic zone “Area C” will be turned on again on Monday 26 August at 07.30 after the summer break. As before, entry to the zone will be subject to a congestion charge on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 07.30 to 19.30, and on Thursdays from 07.30 to 18.00.

New this year is a discount for motorists who forget to pay the charge by activating their ticket before midnight on the following day: they can still avoid a fine by buying and activating a €30 ticket before midnight on the seventh day from the time of entry. While it’s considerably more than the €5 daily charge, it is a great saving compared to the fine.

To enter in “Area C”, motorists must buy and activate an entrance ticket. The ticket costs €5 euro and can be bought at parking meters, newsagents, tobacconists, ATM transport authority information points, at the ATMs of Intesa Sanpaolo bank, or online on the site

The ticket must be activated no later than midnight of the day after access by sending an SMS message, calling the call centre, by visiting the dedicated website or in municipal offices.

Motorcycles and scooters, electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as natural gas, LPG and bi-fuel vehicles are exempted from payment. Exemption is also provided for vehicles transporting people with disabilities, subjected to life-saving treatment or for access to A&E first-aid points.

Reduced-rate subscriptions are available for residents within the zone. Full details of the congestion charge, how to pay it, and what exceptions and reductions are available are published in English on the Area C website: look for “English” in the left-hand column.
