Milan leading in sustainable transport.
Milan’s bike-sharing service BikeMI this month celebrates its first decade with another 34 docking stations – bringing the total up to 323, scattered all over the city – and another 630 bikes, bringing the total fleet to 4,280, plus 1,150 pedal-assisted electric bikes, 150 of them with child seats.
The birthday was an occasion to show off the positive results of a survey conducted by Milan University: BikeMI is appreciated for its pricing policy and for the design of the bikes, the location of the docking stations and the quality of the customer service.
The statistics of the bike-sharing service tell their own tale of customer satisfaction, said councillor Marco Granelli, presenting the results. Some 650,000 signed-up users have made 23 million trips for over 46 million km.
And apart from the health benefits for the riders, the system is also environmentally virtuous, with the charging stations for the e-bikes powered by solar panels, and the saving of some 9.3m kilos of CO2 in the city’s atmosphere.
BikeMI is active daily from 07.00 to midnight, with the hours extended for special events. Subscriptions are available for a day, for a week, or for a year.
