Milan’s La Scala to aid quake kids

La Traviata preview to raise funds.

Milan’s world-famous opera-house Teatro alla Scala will stage an extraordinary preview of Verdi’s opera La Traviata to raise funds for the youngest victims of the devastating series of earthquakes which have been shaking central Italy since 24 August.

The opera-house artists and staff who started the initiative ,which has been approved by Fondazione president and Milan mayor Beppe Sala, will dedicate their salaries to the project.

Tickets for the extraordinary preview will cost half the regular price. They will be available on Saturday 11 February from 09.00 from the central box office and from 12.00 on the theatre website.

The performance will be presented on Sunday 26 February at 19.00 conducted by Nello Santi. Ailyn Perez will play the title role of Violetta, Francesco Meli her admirer Alfredo, and Leo Nucci his father Giorgio. Dante Ferretti will sign the scenery and Gabriella Pescucci the costumes.

The entire proceeds from the extra performance will be devolved to a project to help the children made homeless or orphans by the quakes. The theatre management is currently working to identify the most suitable project to support.

Six performances of La Traviata were already scheduled at La Scala from 28 February to 14 March, and were sold out as soon as tickets were made available.
