Trenord plan to cut cancellations and remodernise.
Milan-based regional rail network Trenord has announced the transfer of 139 little-used trains to a coach service, in a move calculated to reduce the cancellations caused by the unreliability of old rolling stock.
The change comes into effect on 9 December, and will affect only a small number of travellers, as the routes were chosen among those used by fewer than 50 passengers, and during off-peak periods.
Some of the carriages on Trenord lines are over 35 years old, and their breakdowns have caused cancellations and delays. Almost half of Trenord’s rolling stock has an average age of around 32 years, and are the cause of two thirds of all the delays which have plagued commuters in recent years.
New stock is being bought, states Trenord, and should enter into service in mid-2020.
The announcement by Trenord confirms that the other more than 2,200 daily runs will be unaffected, and that peak-time travel – and especially the routes arriving in or departing from Milan, including the Malpensa airport express – will remain unchanged.
Some routes, however, will see the number of connections reduced on Sundays and public holidays.
The new timetables will be available on the Trenord website well in advance of the switchover date, the company promises. There will also be posters explaining the changes in all stations served by the line, and an increased presence of staff providing information on the stations affected by the changes.
