For Milan parents to choose
Milan city administration has invited parents with pre-school-age kids to visit the city's optional crèches and pre-schools on the afternoons of 25 and 26 February, to help them make a choice.
From 16.30 to 18.00 on each day, they will be welcomed to assess the premises and equipment and meet the staff, before registering their children for a place between 3 and 31 March. Online registration is necessary for families already resident in Milan, while those about to transfer their residence to the city, or who have not yet registered their new abode here since arrival, registration is available by phone, tel. 020202.
The city offers some 33,000 places for children not yet old enough for compulsory education. The places are made available on a points system: points are calculated according to the family’s economic situation, with particular attention for those who have recently lost their jobs, and whether the children already have siblings in the city schools or pre-schools. The “place in the queue” – the order in which the registrations are made – however has no effect on the points.
The crèches, or nidi d’infanzia, are open for children born between 1 January 2013 and 31 May 2015. The next stage, Sezione Primavera, is for those born between 1 January and 31 August 2013. The pre-school, or scuola d’infanzia, is available for kids born between 1 January 2010 and 30 April 2013.
Full details of the system and how to register children for these services are available on this page of the city hall website. Six-year-olds and upwards should already have been booked for compulsory education by 15 February.
