Public transport over the holidays

Milan transport authority ATM has announced details of surface and underground lines over the upcoming holiday period.

For many Milanesi, the festivities will start with the Inter-Milan match at San Siro at 20.45 on Sunday. ATM will put on extra runs on many lines, including five extra trains on the M1 metro line and 10 extra trams on line 16, plus 14 extra shuttle buses between the stadium and the metro from 17.45 until midnight. Another 20 shuttles will run between Piazza Axum and Piazza De Angeli from 21.30 to 00.30. Further details of extra services for the derby match are on this page of the ATM website.

On Christmas Day, metro lines M1, M2 and M3 will run from 07.00 to around 19.30. On New Year’s Eve, only the urban stretch (M1 as far as Molino Dorino, M2 up to Cascina Gobba) will be extended until about 02.00. Details of first and last departures on these two main festivities are available on this page.

Saturday timetables will be followed on 21, 23 and 24, 27, 28, 30, 31 December and from 2 to 4 January, while Sunday times will be valid on 22, 26, 29 December and 1, 5 and 6 January. But extra trains will be added on the underground from 21 to 24 December as long as the services are running.

Night buses will run as usual on weekends and additionally on New Year’s Eve and on the night of 5-6 January, for the Befana (Epiphany) holiday on 6 January, but they will not run in the night from 25 to 26 December.

Full details of other, minor amendments, including extra opening of car parks – some of them free – and closure of some ticket offices, are given on this page. Note in particular the attachments at the foot of the page with detailed holiday timetables for different types of public transport, which can be printed off.

Finally, city hall announces that the “Area C” limited traffic zone will be suspended from 23 December to 6 January inclusive, but the stop on vehicles longer than 7.5 metres will remain in force.
