Social chefs help Milan elderly

Dozens of volunteer “social chefs” will cook and serve lunch on Saturday 6 April to senior citizens selected by the city’s social services, announced councillor Pierfrancesco Majorino.

This will be the second initiative, following the successful launch of the programme on 24 March.  The volunteers – some of them professionals, but also including ordinary citizens – served risotto, roast meat with potatoes or a roast bream, and Easter cake, and found the time to stop for a chat with lonely pensioners.  This time, too, the senior citizens will choose their own menu.

“The old folk chose to have lunch on a Saturday or a Sunday rather than an evening meal, as it’s more sociable,” Majorino added.  “The aim is to create friendly relations, a chance to rebuild neighbourly links between people from the same borough, sometimes even from the same street or condo.”

The Comune is still looking for volunteers.  Anybody with a gift for cooking and a will to spend a couple of hours keeping company with the lonely will be welcome to join the initiative: send an email to info@cittadinifattivi.it if you would like to join the team.
