Trenitalia cancels plan to offer sweets to women travelling on 8 March.
Trenitalia has scrapped its plan to offer lemon-flavoured sweets to women on 8 March, International Women's Day, after the promotion attracted widespread criticism.
The special offer only applied to women travelling in executive class or those who availed of the bar and restaurant service on high-speed trains.
The offer, which contained the clause "while stocks last", was removed from the Trenitalia website following a barrage of protests and sarcasm on social media.
The short-lived offer also coincides with a strike by Trenitalia workers from 00.00 until 21.00 on Friday 8 March.
