After barely two months in Milan.
Makhar Vaziev, director of the corps de ballet at Milan’s world-famous Teatro alla Scala, has embarrassed the management with a snap decision to switch to Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre with the same role.
A terse announcement released by La Scala reads: “The management of the Teatro alla Scala has learned from a statement by the Bolshoi Theatre that Makhar Vaziev has accepted taking on the position of Director of the Ballet, even though he signed a contract on 3 September for a further three years as Director of the Ballet of the Teatro alla Scala from September 2015 to July 2018.”
The senior Milan management made no mention of discussion or possible reasons for the U-turn, but instead made it clear that they had learned of the move only after reading the Bolshoi news release.
While it decides whom to invite to take over the prestigious position, La Scala confirms that “all appointments announced for the [current] ballet season remain confirmed.”
Specialist media, while unable to shed light on Vaziev's decision, report that Roberto Bolle and Alessandra Ferri are among the names being rumoured behind the scenes in Milan.
