A week of flamenco for Milan

1-7 July: 9th Flamenco Festival opens Friday.

The ninth edition of Milano Flamenco Festival brings a week-long programme of shows, films and workshops to keep fans’ feet tapping, starting Friday 1 July.

The festival celebrates the traditional art form of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, including singing, dancing, guitar music and hand-clapping, declared by UNESCO one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Organised by PuntoFlamenco, a cultural association supported by Milan city hall and the Spanish embassy to Italy, the festival brings leading companies and soloists to demonstrate the fiery and dramatic art. This year a new section will be dedicated to the Romany inhabitants of Italy, who have always been closely associated with the art form.

While most of the events will be hosted in the Piccolo Teatro Studio in Via Rivoli, others will take place in PuntoFlamenco’s own hall in Via Carlo Farini and in the Teatro Strehler, as well as two events for inmates of the San Vittore jail.

A full programme of the week’s appointments is available on the PuntoFlamenco website.
