25 Nov-5 March. Over 100 works on show in the Galleria d’Italia.
The gallery in Piazza Scala is hosting Bellotto e Canaletto. Lo stupore e la luce (Amazement and light), Milan’s first homage to the 18th century artists, until 5 March 2017.
Works on show include paintings, drawings and etchings, around one third of them never before exhibited in Italy. The two painters – uncle and nephew – are considered the leading protagonists of the Venetian “Veduta” style, and illustrate one of European painting’s most fascinating episodes.
While Giovanni Antonio Canal, as he was correctly called, led the way with a new conception of composition based on what were in his time modern research into optics, his nephew studied this technique and developed it in a personal key.
The exhibition is at the centre of a rich programme of collateral events including guided visits, aperitifs, a performance investigating the interplay between the two artists and three conferences. Events include guided visits for kids and for school groups.
