At three months after his death, this exhibition remembers this master of contemporary European photography Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013). On display are 110 photographs, shot between 1969 and 1998. Basilico played a central role in the development of documentary photography which focused on cityscapes in constant transformation. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan and began photography when he was still a student. Originally his main interest was social photography, especially labour disputes and student street demonstrations. His works caught changes of the contemporary landscape, including the passage from the industrial to the post-industrial eras and the evolution from the metropolis to the megalopolis. After Milan, his city of origin, Basilico’s works focuses on Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Lisbon, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco and Shanghai.
