5 Sept 18 - 3 Feb 19. The city of Mantova has become a destination since September for the major retrospective dedicated to the work of Marc Chagall.
As the first of a cycle of exhibitions focused on 20th century art, the 130 works on display at the Palazzo della Ragione are an impressive testament to the historical significance of the talented artist.
The paintings, drawings, and etchings are curated to reflect on the social and political uncertainty that Chagall experienced as a Russian Jew in the early 20th century, as well as to demonstrate his influence on poets, writers and critics.
The highlight of the exhibition is the well- known murals created by Chagall for the Moscow State Jewish Chamber Theater, three years after the Russian Revolution. Typically colorful and symbolic, the murals have rarely been shown outside of Russia, and give the immersive exhibit a distinct attraction.
Festivalletteratura is running in conjunction with this exhibit, lending an international atmosphere to the city. If you find yourself in Mantua, after visiting the Palazzo della Ragione, head to Retròbottega Bistro. The seasonal menu includes local specialities such as the Mustard of Mantua.
