Milan's well-kept secrets - La Pietà Rondanini of Michelangelo

Not even many Milanese know that the museum houses the Rondanini Pietà, which Michelangelo worked on from the 1550s until the last weeks of his life in 1564. In his final sculpture, Michelangelo returned to the theme of the Virgin Mary mourning the dead Christ, which he first explored when he was a young man in his famous 1499 Pietà in St Peter’s basilica, Rome. When viewing the sculpture from the rear it looks as if Jesus is holding up Mary with his back, instead of Mary cradling Jesus.
