4 Feb-3 April 2010. This exhibition features new work by the German artist Stephan Balkenhol, one of the leading contemporary sculptors.
Balkenhol has made many public sculptures including the five-metre tall male bust in cedar wood, which was on display in the Imperial Roman Forums from 25 Oct 2009 to 15 Jan 2010. His figures are carved with precision from a wooden block and then lightened with colour.
Balkenhol studied under the minimalist German sculptor Ulrich Rueckriem at the Academy of Hamburg before discovering his predilection for wood and his passion for reinventing figures. His sculptures are a sober and ironic representation of the mystery of modern man, who Balkenhol likes to observe and photograph on the streets.
